What Is a Slot?

A narrow notch, groove or opening, such as the keyway in a machine or the slit of a coin in a vending machine. He dropped a coin in the slot and dialed. Also used: 1. to place something into a slot in another thing, as a time or a position. Visitors can book a time slot a week or more in advance. 2. to fit something readily or easily into a slot. The car seat belt slotted into place quickly.

In a video slot game, the pay table is a display that shows all the different symbols in the game, their payouts and what it takes to trigger the top prize (if any). It also lists the odds of hitting the jackpot and other important information. Often, the pay table is displayed above and below the reels, but on some older machines it may be found in a help menu.

The pay table is not to be confused with the ‘hold’ feature of a slot machine, which is an attempt to keep players betting. The ‘taste’ amount paid out is usually small, but it keeps players seated and betting, and only rarely does a machine fail to pay even the minimum out over several pulls. This ‘taste’ system was originally based on electromechanical slot machines’ “tilt switches”, but is now almost always an electronic function.

Unlike benchmark positions, slot positions are not evaluated against the external job market and their compensation is based on internal equity and an organization’s pay structure. In order to conduct a thorough and comprehensive compensation study, it is crucial to recognize the differences between benchmark and slot roles.
